Le Jardin: the sun terrace above Lake St. Moritz

Le Jardin is the sun terrace of Villa Beaulieu, facing south above Lake St. Moritz. In summer it is the finest spot in the villa: for a late lunch, an afternoon coffee, or an aperitivo as the light turns gold. A reservation is never needed, and the terrace is open to everyone, not only to our villa guests.

A garden that slopes toward the lake

The garden falls gently toward the water, looking out over the lake and the mountains behind it. Old hedges frame it and take the street noise out of the place.

Tables are set about in the green rather than in rows. You find a spot, and nobody rearranges you afterwards. Parasols wait for the afternoon, and the last of the sun sits on the water in the early evening.

It is a comfortable concept, not a scheduled one. If you are still on your first coffee after an hour, you have understood it correctly.

The summer kitchen

The menu follows what summer offers. Charcuterie, cheese and small plates through the day, alongside dishes that change with the season.

It is simple and good, made for a long day in the sun. If you are after a full menu, the Brasserie is the better place, where guest chefs cook through the season.

Nobody needs anything explained in the garden. People find a spot, and then they stay longer than they meant to.

What makes an afternoon here

• The view. The lake lies directly below you and the panorama behind it does the rest.
• The quiet. No piped music, no programme. On some evenings the piano from Le Bar comes outside with us.
• The menu. Small, seasonal, with no obligation to make a meal of it.
• Champagne Saturday. A bottle of Lallier for 95 francs on Saturdays, for as long as the sun holds.
• The company. You sit among villa guests, locals, and people just back from the lake circuit.

When the weather turns

The Engadin is no guarantee of sunshine. When it greys over we simply move inside and open Le Bar, with the same menu and the same aperitivo.

Honestly, those are often the better evenings. The salon is lower, the light warmer, and the piano stands right beside you.

Getting here, and what's nearby

Villa Beaulieu stands at Via Arona 34, a few minutes on foot from the centre of St. Moritz and from the station. You need no car in the valley: the Rhaetian Railway brings you here over the Albula line.

The lake circuit runs practically past the terrace, and the mountain railways are minutes away. Whatever else appeals is covered by Engadin St. Moritz and under our experiences.

For occasions in the garden

The garden can be used for private occasions, on its own or together with the villa. An apéro on the terrace to open, dinner inside afterwards: that is the most chosen sequence for weddings here. The Ballroom seats up to 70, the Brasserie up to 50 guests.
